Introduction

Vehicles have always required some engineering. I am glad about that, as my career in vehicle development has been mentally engaging and motivating. I have other engineering colleagues who are similarly motivated, such as my friend who owns Raptor Performance.  We have worked together on many occasions, applying engineering diligence to the development of products.  This is no less true for specialty vehicles or vehicles with specific applications, like getting it down the track as fast as possible. To be a competent engineer, in general, requires understanding physical phenomena and applying those principles creatively to meet objectives and solve problems.  Getting an engineering degree is unnecessary; we have a colleague and friend, Wally, who started with what he would say, “I just stuff boards”.  He has held engineering positions and led engineering organizations. All with a sense of exploration and continuous learning, with a good deal of application.  Whether a formal engineering degree or self-education, neither alone will be helpful; it is only a start.
